Okorafor was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1974 to Nigerian parents. She grew up in a multicultural household, and her exposure to different cultures and languages influenced her writing from an early age.

Okorafor earned a BA in English and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. She also studied African literature and culture at the University of Nigeria.

Okorafor's debut novel, "Binti," was published in 2015. The novel tells the story of a young woman from the Himba tribe who travels to Oomza University, a prestigious intergalactic school. "Binti" was critically acclaimed and won the Nebula Award for Best Novella.

Okorafor has since published several other novels, including "Who Fears Death" (2010),"The Book of Phoenix" (2015),and "The River of Shadows" (2018). Her work has been translated into over 20 languages and has won numerous awards, including the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the World Fantasy Award.
