The Founding of the NIYC

The NIYC was founded in 1961 by a group of Native American youth from across the United States. These young people were frustrated by the lack of opportunities for Native Americans and the discrimination they faced on a daily basis. They founded the NIYC to advocate for the rights of Native American youth and to promote Native American self-determination.

The NIYC's Goals

The NIYC's goals were to:

  • Promote Native American self-determination
  • Address the needs of Native American youth
  • Challenge discrimination against Native Americans
  • Build a strong Native American community

The NIYC's Accomplishments

The NIYC played a significant role in the development of Native activism in the United States. The NIYC's accomplishments include:

  • Organizing the first National Indian Youth Conference in 1961
  • Publishing the first national Native American youth magazine, The Indian Voice
  • Creating the first national Indian youth leadership training program
  • Advocating for the passage of the Indian Civil Rights Act of 1968

The NIYC's Legacy

The NIYC's legacy is one of activism and self-determination. The NIYC helped to raise awareness of the needs of Native American youth and to challenge discrimination against Native Americans. The NIYC also helped to build a strong Native American community. The NIYC's legacy continues today through the work of Native American youth activists who are fighting for the rights of Native Americans and promoting Native American self-determination.
