Shipping Mr Dig: The Ancient Find
The Discovery
In July 2009, metal detectorist Terry Herbert was scanning a field in Staffordshire, England, when his detector picked up a strong signal. He began to dig, and soon he uncovered a small gold object. He continued to dig, and soon he realized that he had found a hoard of gold and silver treasure. The hoard contained over 1,500 pieces of gold and silver, including jewelry, coins, and weapons. It is the largest hoard of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver ever found.
Herbert contacted the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a government-funded organization that records and catalogues archaeological finds. The hoard was declared treasure trove, which means that it became the property of the British Crown. Herbert was awarded a small reward for finding the hoard, but he claimed that he was entitled to a share of the find because he had discovered it on his own property.

The Legal Battle
The case went to court, and in 2012, Herbert was awarded a share of the hoard. The judge ruled that Herbert was entitled to a share of the hoard because he had discovered it on his own property, even though it was declared treasure trove. The case set a precedent for future cases involving the ownership of archaeological finds.
