Sister Sarah Pick was an extraordinary educator and social justice advocate who dedicated her life to serving marginalized communities. Her innovative educational methods and unwavering commitment to empowering students left a lasting legacy in the field of alternative education. This article explores the life, work, and legacy of Sister Sarah Pick, a true pioneer who made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals.

Early Life and Education

Sister Sarah Pick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1859. Her family was devoutly Catholic, and she was raised with a strong sense of social justice and compassion. After completing her early education, she entered the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati in 1878, taking the name Sister Augustine.

Sister Sarah Pick's passion for education was evident from an early age. She earned a teaching certificate from the Sisters of Charity and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Dayton. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue further studies, and she eventually earned a Master's degree in education from the University of Chicago.

Innovative Educational Methods

Sister Sarah Pick recognized the limitations of traditional educational systems, which often failed to meet the needs of marginalized students. Inspired by the progressive education movement, she developed innovative teaching methods that focused on student-centered learning and social justice.

In 1890, Sister Sarah Pick founded St. Joseph's Protectory, an alternative school for orphaned and delinquent girls. St. Joseph's Protectory was a radical departure from the harsh and punitive institutions of the time. Pick's methods emphasized love, respect, and individualized instruction. She believed that every child had the potential to succeed, regardless of their background.

Sister Sarah Pick's educational philosophy was based on the Montessori method, which encourages hands-on learning and a holistic approach to education. She also implemented innovative programs that addressed the social and emotional needs of her students, including vocational training, health education, and recreational activities.

Social Justice Advocacy

Sister Sarah Pick's commitment to social justice extended beyond the classroom. She was an outspoken advocate for the rights of women, immigrants, and the poor. She worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions of the marginalized communities she served.

In 1894, Sister Sarah Pick established the Working Girls' Protective Home, a safe haven for young women who had migrated to Cincinnati in search of work. The home provided these women with lodging, job training, and social support.

Sister Sarah Pick also played a key role in the settlement house movement, which aimed to provide social and educational services to immigrant communities. She founded the St. Francis Settlement House in 1902, which offered a wide range of programs, including English language classes, childcare, and job placement assistance.

Later Years and Legacy

Sister Sarah Pick continued to work tirelessly for social justice and alternative education throughout her lifetime. In 1925, she published her memoirs, "The Wings of Mercy," which chronicled her experiences and the challenges she faced in her work.

Sister Sarah Pick passed away in 1944, but her legacy continues to inspire educators and social justice advocates today. Her innovative educational methods and unwavering commitment to serving marginalized communities have left a lasting impact on the fields of education and social work.

Sister Sarah Pick was a true pioneer in the field of alternative education and social justice. Her innovative teaching methods, her unwavering commitment to empowering students, and her life-long advocacy for the marginalized have left an enduring legacy. Her work continues to inspire educators and social workers to strive for a more just and equitable world.
